2024: A YEAR FOR ACTION
Across the country, people are working for a greener and fairer society, and we need politicians to do the same.
We worry about the state of our NHS, struggle to pay our bills, and see the precious rivers, green spaces and species we love in decline. Storms, heatwaves and wildfires are multiplying, with devastating impacts on communities in the UK and across the world.
The scale of this crisis is too important for division and delay. We need urgent action. People and communities all over the country want more action from the government, and many communities are already taking action for positive change. Now we need to make sure that politicians know that too. This is the time to come together and call for fair and effective action on climate and nature.
what can i do?
We need to show all politicians, political parties and candidates that people up and down the country support urgent action to address the climate and nature crises.
We’ve launched an open letter to the leaders of the main national political parties, calling on them to commit to doing everything they can to meet our national and international commitments to tackle climate change and protect and restore nature.
Add your community’s voice to this letter to party leaders, and help us demonstrate the breadth and depth of the public mandate for action.
What are we calling for?
We are calling on all politicians, political parties and candidates to take urgent action to address the climate and nature crises, backed by evidence and rooted in conversations with communities.
In this election year, in this critical decade for the planet, we are urging our decision makers to listen to the British public, and to engage in constructive conversation with us all about how to address the crises we all face. This must involve fair and effective action to meet or exceed the UK’s targets in the Climate Change Act, and our international commitments:
Warm homes and affordable bills
Keep homes warm and bills affordable with a fully-funded long term plan for home energy efficiency and a shift to heat pumps.
Energy security
Safeguard our energy security by replacing polluting fossil fuel energy with affordable renewables.
Clean air
Make our air cleaner and lungs healthier by investing in walking, cycling, and public transport and speeding up the shift to electric vehicles.
Loss and damage
Apply the principle of fairness by securing adequate money for loss and damage caused by climate change in the hardest hit countries.
Climate funding commitments
Deliver on promises to provide funding to help poorer countries adapt so they are more resilient to the pressures of climate change, and pursue sustainable development.
Healthy and sustainable food
Ensure our food is healthy and sustainable, by doubling the budget for nature friendly farming and providing guidance on a climate friendly diet.
Protect and restore UK nature
Protect and restore the UK’s priceless forests, rivers and moors, and establish a right to clean air, water and access to nature.
These actions will not only help us get closer to ending our contribution to climate change, but support our health, well-being and economy.
We urge all politicians to take the action needed to succeed in building a fair, green and secure future.
