COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2024
The Great Big Green Week is a celebration of community action to tackle climate change. Every year, people up and down the country come together to show the heartfelt, brace, everyday actions being taken to stand up for nature and fight climate change.
The first Great Big Green Week took place in September 2021, and was the largest event for climate and nature ever seen in the UK, with over 5,000 events taking place up and down the country.
In 2024, over a half a million people took part. Communities, national organisations, institutions, businesses and media outlets joined in, ultimately putting pressure on the government to up its game on climate change.
Join us in June 2025 for the next Great Big Green Week - taking place between 7th and 15th June.
COMMUNITY OPEN LETTER
On 21 November 2023, we launched an open letter to the leaders of the main national political parties. The letter calls on them to commit to meeting our national and international commitments to tackle the climate and nature crises.
Local organisations and groups, such as climate action network groups, local branches of national organisations, youth groups, faith groups, sports clubs, cultural organisations, and parents associations signed the letter
In total, the letter was signed by 520 community groups and local organisations, across 322 constituencies, and it was handed in to the leaders of the main political parties on Tuesday 2nd July, just head of the election to hammer home that people really wanted to see climate and nature as a priority for the Government.
THE ELECTION AND LOCAL HUSTINGS
Not many of us were expecting the election to be called when it was this year! Despite the uncertainty and surprise, communities quickly rallied together to host hustings in their local area. We saw 50 local hustings registered on our map, and we’re sure many more happened across the country, with candidates across the country hearing how important climate and nature was to their prospective voters.
Since then, we have seen positive commitments from the Government on tackling the climate and nature crises, but we still need to keep the pressure up to go further.
