However peat is dug up so we can use it in our gardens, even though there are many great nutrient-rich alternatives that are still great for your plants. </span></p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>﻿</strong><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Check the labels of your favourite composts to see if they contain peat, and look out for alternatives from major brands like SylvaGrow or Westland's in future. Remember that words like 'environmentally friendly', 'compost' and 'organic' doesn't alway equal low or no peat, and even houseplant compost often contains peat. </span></h2></h3></section><section><h3><h2><strong>﻿I pledge to...</strong></h2></h3></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to plant a tree or wildlife meadow area in my garden</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know... <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Trees are crucial in tackling climate change - they absorb carbon dioxide from the air and produce oxygen. Despite their importance, only 13% of the UK’s total land area has tree cover (compared to an EU average of 35%). If we’re to slow the rate the world is warming, the UK needs 1.5 billion more trees.</span></p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>﻿</strong>Follow The Woodland Trust's straightforward guide for 3 successful ways to plant a tree. You could also sign up to volunteer with a tree-planting organisation in your local community and attend a session with your family and friends. Find out more via Trees for Cities, Trees for Life, Treesponsibility or City of Trees.&nbsp;</h2></h3></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to leave an area of my garden wild</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know... <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Wild garden areas help reduce the impacts of climate change and also protect a diverse range of insects and wildlife. A 10% increase in planting in urban areas would help control the rise in summertime air temperatures predicted with climate change.</span></p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>﻿</strong><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Leave a wild spot in your garden by not mowing the lawn or weeding - and watch the long grass and wildflowers grow! Alternatively, you can create a wildflower area from scratch on the bare ground. Visit wildlifetrusts.org for more information.</span></h2></h3></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to eat plant based at least once a week</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know... <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Meat and dairy production causes 14.5% of global climate-changing gases (more than all forms of transport combined). Vegetarians have approximately half the food-related carbon footprint of meat eaters, and vegans have even less. Changing your diet just one day a week can make a world of difference!</span></p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>﻿</strong><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Committ to at least one day each week where you do not eat any meat or dairy. There are plenty of easy and tasty plant-based recipes to try out with your friends and family. Consider Meat Free Mondays, visit meatfreemondays.com for recipes, information and advice.</span></h2></h3></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to eat seasonally</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know... <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Food that isn’t in season has usually travelled long distances to get to us, or has been grown in non-native climates using fertiliser or greenhouses requiring a huge amount of energy, which produce emissions that contribute towards climate change. Eating seasonally can reduce the carbon footprint of your food by up to 10%.</span></p></p></section><section><h3></h3></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to reduce food waste</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know... <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">If food waste was a country, it would be the third highest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. Any food we chuck out still had to be grown, stored and shipped, resulting in lots of carbon emissions. We waste about a third of all food produced for human consumption.</span></p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>﻿</strong><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">There are plenty of easy ways to cut food waste at home. Plan your meals before going shopping so you buy what you’re actually going to eat. Invest in some tupperware and eat your leftovers for lunch the next day.  Get creative with ingredients you have left over - you can put odds and ends in curries, soups and pies to create new meals. And if you can’t use something up, freeze it!</span></h2></h3></section><section><h3><h2><strong>﻿I pledge to...</strong></h2></h3></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to go car-free for a week (or more!)</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know... <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Road transport accounts for 22% of total UK emissions of carbon dioxide. A fifth of that planet-warming pollution happens during journeys less than 5 miles – short journeys that could be made by foot or bike.</span></p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to take a no fly year</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know... <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">An economy-class return flight from London to New York emits an estimated 0.67 tonnes of CO2 per passenger. That's equivalent to 11% of the average annual emissions for someone in the UK or about the same as those caused by someone living in Ghana over a year.</span></p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to make my next car electric</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know...<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Over a year, just one electric car on the roads can save an average 1.5 million grams of CO2. That’s the equivalent of four return flights from London to Barcelona. </span></p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>﻿I pledg﻿e to...</strong></h2></h3></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to switch to renewable energy</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know... 2019 was the UK's cleanest energy year on record, with renewable electricity overtaking fossil fuels throughout the year. This is great news, because the gases released when <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">we burn fossil fuels trap heat in our atmosphere - warming our world faster than ever before, and causing climate change.</span></p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to stop my home leaking heat</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know... 20<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">% of the UK's planet-warming gases come from heating our homes.</span></p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>Pledge to replace appliances at the end of their life with energy efficient ones</strong></h2></h3><p><p>Did you know... <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">A 10 year old refrigerator can consume up to 50% of the energy used in a home.</span></p></p></section>
