SHOW THE LOVE WITH GREEN HEART CRAFTING

Green hearts will be popping up across the country throughout February as people across the UK join the country’s biggest conversation about climate change.

Everyone from musicians to football clubs, community groups to businesses, astronauts to schoolchildren, teachers and faith leaders get involved to Show the Love for everything they want to protect from the climate crisis.

Green heart crafting is a great way to get children talking about how climate change is affecting the people, places and things they love. They can write on their hearts what things they want to protect, or what they will do to reduce their contribution to climate change - such as riding their bike or walking to school.

There are so many ways their green hearts can help start conversations about climate change with their friends and family. They could attach a pin to the back and wear their hearts with pride, hang them from a tree, or make a display in your school or community centre.

No matter how you choose to show them off, make sure you share your photos with us on social media using the hashtag #ShowTheLove so we can see and share your hearts with the world!

IDEAS AND INSPIRATION

  • Create a heart mobile to display the personal challenges your classes are taking

  • Create green heart badges and send them to your school’s local MP

  • Design a heart shaped logo to remind others of an action they can take to show the love for the life we love

  • Pointillism produce—painting with dots! You can use the end of a pencil, a paper art straw, the end of a paint brush or a wooden stick.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Materials to make the heart from such as:

    • Old/recycled fabric

    • Paper (you could even use newspaper!)

  • Tools to decorate your heart such as:

    • Fabric pens

    • paints

    • buttons

    • fabric strips

    • eco-glitter

    • eco-friendly glue

  • Show The Love stencil for your fabric

  • Scissors and glue, or needle and thread if sewing your heart

STEP 1

Ask the children to create a unique heart design using the materials provided either by drawing a heart or using a template.

STEP 2

Once each child has created their heart shape, ask them to use fabric pens, paints, buttons, fabric strips, eco-glitter and eco-friendly glue to decorate their unique heart!

STEP 3

Encourage children to write on their heart what they want to protect from climate change, or to write the action they will take to Show the Love - such as riding their bike or walking to school, or talking to their parents or guardian about climate change.

MAKE

Create your green heart - you could even upcycle old fabrics by crafting a beautiful green patchwork heart to wear or share.

SHARE

Share your green heart - and send it to your MP in February to tell them what you’re doing for a cleaner, greener future - and ask them to do their bit too!
